The concept of terrorism seems to have only entered American consciousness in recent decades. In actuality, in one form or another, terrorism
has plagued the world through much of history. The reasons behind acts of terrorism can vary significantly, of course, as can the acts themselves. So too has the
way the world deals with terrorism varied. Acts of terrorism can be loosely defined as acts perpetrated against citizens to instill terror,
as acts that are committed by non governmental bodies or representatives. This definition, of course, varies significantly according to the entity providing that definition.
While most Americans tend to associate terrorism with the 9-11 attacks against the World Trade Center and the simultaneous attacks on the Pentagon itself, terrorism has been a
part of our history since the American Revolution! The Boston Tea Party, for example, has been described by more than one author as one of the most classical acts
of terrorism. When considering the American Revolution in general and the Boston Tea Party specifically in regard to its use of terrorism it
must be remembered that the revolution was not something that was supported across the board by all colonists. The city of Boston is an excellent example of that fact.
