Turkey, Romania and Slovenia, have long experienced ethnic strife in the form of ethnic cleansing and terrorist attacks of one group against another group. The area has a history
that encompasses three major religions of the world; Muslim, Jewish and Christianity. The differences of these religions have led to political, social, and cultural changes which have changed boundary lines
and associations with other countries. The historic influence of imperialism in the region continues to this day, as the more prominent world powers continue to influence the economic and social
aspects of other nations. The attempts by the world powers to force change in nations which are not as developed has resulted in terrorism attacks aimed at the world
powers. ETHNIC CONFLICT IN THE BALKAN PENINSULA - PAST AND PRESENT For thousands of years the civilizations and social systems of the Balkan Peninsula have alternately collided and merged.
For nearly four hundred years, most of the region known as the Balkans was ruled by a Muslim Sultan in Constantinople (John, 2004). The Orthodox Christian Church and the
Jewish constitutes enjoyed relative religious freedom (John, 2004). However, among some of the peoples of the region, most notably the Slavs of Bosnia and the Albanians, large scale conversions
took place due to the better opportunities for Muslims in the Ottoman bureaucracy (John, 2004). This may have been the first historical instance of imperialism. Imperialism is the
policy of a country or group of individuals extending their control over foreign entities by direct territorial conquest or by having some type of control on the politics and economy
