had their ups and downs as all married couples do, like when Terri splurged on an $80 visit to the beauty parlor and Michael reacted angrily to what he viewed
as a costly extravagance (Campo-Flores, 2003). When he arrived home that night, the couple kissed, made up, and it appeared all was again well (Campo-Flores, 2003). However, a
few hours later, Michael heard a loud thud, and when he raced into the hallway, he discovered Terri lying face down on the floor, making gurgling noises and completely unresponsive
(Campo-Flores, 2003). Paramedics arrived and told a shocked Michael Schiavo that his life had flatlined or that she was in cardiac arrest (Campo-Flores, 2003). All that was known
conclusively about Terris condition was that she suffered from a potassium imbalance, which could have been related to an eating disorder (Campo-Flores, 2003). Terri had always been extremely self-conscious
about her weight and she may have been bulimic. Although Terris heart was successfully resuscitated, she remained in what doctors have described as "a persistent vegetative state" that differs
from a comatose condition in that the patient is "so brain-damaged that she seemed robbed of cognitive ability" (Campo-Flores, 2003, p. 50). That was thirteen long years ago, and nothing
has changed for Terri Schiavo. Initially, her husband Michael took care of her personally, and when she was moved to a nursing home facility, his specific treatment demands became
a "nightmare" for the administrative staff (Campo-Flores, 2003, p. 50). Only a feeding tube keeps her alive, and her husband has lobbied for the past five years to remove
