can either be a positive factor in the educational goal or a negative one. Unfortunately, we live in a politically charged world, a world where rhetoric sometimes takes the
place of meaningful communication. In such a world it is sometimes difficult to distinguish between truly meaningful terminology and catch phrases that are utilized primarily because they are politically
correct. Consider, for example, the phrases: authentic assessments, excellence in education, no child left behind, educating the whole child, and education that makes a difference. These phrases
are used quite frequently in todays educational arena yet few in that arena have spent any significant amount of time understanding their true meaning. The intent of this paper
is to do just that, to analyze the meaning of each of these phrases and to assess their value in terms of application to the educational goal.
Gutek (2004) instructs that linguistic analysis is, in fact, a philosophical methodology through which meaning can be deduced. This analysis can be accomplished through a
systematic process of defining and redefining the individual words that make up the complex phrase (Gutek, 2004). The phrase "authentic assessment", for example, is properly analyzed by first looking
at and defining the word "authentic" and then looking at and defining the word "assessment". Next, we examine the combined meaning of these words philosophically to determine their
real value in educational applications. The word "authentic" denotes realism and truth while the term "assessment" denotes a measurement. The
phrase "authentic assessment" then could be defined as a real or truthful measure of a students capabilities or performance. Such measurements are, of course, a necessary component of meeting
