dealing successfully with the problem, and potential disadvantages. It also gives some guidelines human resources personnel might consider in dealing with terminations. The Topic The topic under discussion is terminating
employees. There are many reasons for termination, but broadly speaking, there are only a very few categories of termination: firings, downsizings, and voluntary termination. Either the person is let go
for cause (i.e., they are not performing their jobs satisfactorily); the company is eliminating jobs, usually due to become more competitive and save money; or the person wants to make
a change. People have been losing their jobs since there were jobs to lose, but the process of termination can sometimes be a difficult one, even at times winding up
in court if the person perceives the termination is motivated by some sort of bias. It is important therefore that terminations of any kind be handled with sensitivity and professionalism.
Pros and Cons Pros and cons of termination are self-evident. If someone is not pulling their weight, then everyone else has to work that much harder to pick up the
slack. Often, this results in other workers resenting the less-productive person, who is causing them to work harder-but usually with no increase in pay. If the termination is the result
of downsizing, then the entire company benefits because it saves money. It sometimes becomes even more competitive because it has reduced its staff to those who work quickly and well.
The cons are numerous, and include potential lawsuits from terminated employees, lower morale, and the stress of having to fire people-no HR person likes letting others go. Or at least
it is to be hoped that they dont enjoy it; if someone "gets off" on firing others, then it might be time to get rid of him as well.
