Essay / Research Paper Abstract

5 pages in length. Some states across the country have moved to a twenty-five-year driver's license whereby people are legally allowed to travel the roads for a quarter of a century without refreshing their driving skills, getting their eyes checked or even taking a written review. At least one state, however, mandates the driver's picture be retaken after ten years (Arizona). Given the scope of responsibility inherent to operating a motor vehicle, it seems illogical and quite dangerous to allow people on the road without knowing how their skills have deteriorated. This analogy applies to the concept of tenure, as well, which by all accounts locks in a teacher's place along the academic gravy train yet does not monitor the value of instruction being dispensed. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

This aspect of our work draws attention to the interaction between tenure, compensation, and salaries. It is often asked why we do not simply pay academics more to bear the risk of dismissal if their effectiveness falls off later (Dnes et al, 2005, p. 831). According to Williams et al (2007), the primary reason tenure was established in 1915 by the American Association of University Professors is "to ensure academic freedom -- professors freedom to teach, conduct research, and perform other duties without fear of job loss or censure." What it has metamorphosed into for many, however, is an economic security blanket for teachers who - once reaching tenure - can rest on their laurels, not put forth the same level of effort and have no fear of losing their jobs. Having tenure is looked upon more as a right than a privilege (De George, 2003); a profession where one can be locked into job security until reaching retirement is an opportunity handed to very few industries. ...
