(TVA, "Corporate Profile") The online home page of the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) proudly displays the banner: "the nations largest electric power producer" and this is fact. TVA provides power over 17,000 miles of transmission lines to 7.3 million consumers in seven Southeastern states. (TVA, "Corporate Profile"). The moniker not only reflects its standing as a producer of power, but also its standing in the community which it serves. Establishment The Great Depression of the 1930s brought a prolonged drought to Tennessee as it did other states. During these years, schools and other governmental agencies were weakened and many local cultures suffered as a result, and people spent their lives looking for work. Franklin Delano Roosevelt decided to resolve all of these issues by establishing New Deal work programs. In 1933, Congress created the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). (TVA, "History"). Besides providing jobs for local citizens, the TVA, as a government agency, was established for three main purposes: to improve navigation of the Tennessee River, provide means for flood control, and generate electricity in such a way that private utility rates could be measured. In addition to being a government agency, FDR also wanted TVA to be "a corporation clothed with the power of government but possessed of the flexibility and initiative of a private enterprise."
