system that rewards incompetence and should be dismantled. This paper argues that tenure is necessary. Discussion There are many reasons for the creation of the tenure system, but
the two most important are probably that it makes the teaching profession attractive enough to draw top-notch talent; and to guarantee academic freedom to professors. Its easy to find
out what a society values: look where it puts its money. In the U.S., the entertainment industry, including sports, is far ahead of anything else. When we pay
a pro football player ten million dollars a year or some such, but balk at paying a college professor $30,000, theres something seriously wrong-and any pious claims that we love
