Temples and Religious Ritual in Ancient Egypt In understanding the Egyptian religion one must perhaps first realize that they did not necessarily separate their religion from their daily world. As one author notes, "The Egyptian religion can be seen as a system of thought, a means of structuring the world, and of maintaining it so as to make it possible for Creation to persist. It reflected both life on earth among the humans and life on a higher plane among the gods" (Egyptian Temples, part I: Divine Kingship, 2007). It was something people simply lived by in all aspects of their life as they believed that man was only part of the great creation that was the universe (Egyptian Temples, part I: Divine Kingship, 2007). In situations of struggle, such as situations involving famine and drought, the Egyptians believed that the gods had essentially abandoned them and because they believed that without the gods they would cease to exist they incorporated religious ritual into all aspects of life (Egyptian Temples, part I: Divine Kingship, 2007).
