was not completed up 64 A.D. (Parrot 78). This explains why Jesus was told in John 2:20 that the Temple had been built in 46 years. The temple mount was
referred to "Har ha Bayit" (the Mountain of the House) and it was, in fact, a mountain, "though a rather small one" (Wilkinson 70). The building was enormous and the
largest of all of Herods architectural achievements (Parrot 79). According to the ancient Jewish historian Josephus, the court in this Temple was almost twice the one of the previous Temple,
which had been destroyed. The perimeter of the Temple is 1,380 meters and trapezoid in shape. It could be entered by eight gates, two facing south, four from the west,
one from the north and one from the east (Parrot 80). There is reason to believe that the Susa Gate was the gate by which Jesus entered the
Temple on Palm Sunday, as he was coming from Bethphage (Parrot 83). However, while some sources identify the Susa Gate as the "Beautiful Gate" mentioned in Acts, Parrot believes this gate
to be the so-called "Corinthian Gate," and that this was the place where "the crippled man had been placed so that he could beg for alms from those who
went into the sanctuary" (Parrot 88). As Peter and John are referred to as "about to go into the Temple" when they encountered this beggar, Parrot feels that this verse
substantiates the Corinthian Gate as the gate identified as "beautiful." This gate, like the others, was approached by a flight of five steps and, during normal operation, was left open
