particular place and what animals cannot. This relationship between environmental parameters and the species composition of an area is particularly interesting when considering species that are largely limited in
terms of their mobility. Consider, for example, Mollusks. Mollusks belong to the phylum ure. Mollusks vary dramatically in their ability
to tolerate changes in temperature. This variation occurs not just by species but also by age (Elderkin and Klerks 221). The young of one species might be more
tolerant of temperature variations than the adults but in another species just the opposite might be true and the adults would be more tolerant than the young (Elderkin and Klerks
221). Indeed, there can even be differences in tolerance to heat variation even between different populations of the same species. It is important to distinguish, however, between
adaptation and acclimitization. Adaptation requires a change in a species genetic makeup in response to selection pressure (Elderkin and Klerks 221).
Mollusks are invertebrates, multicellular species without a backbone. Unlike warm blooded animals, cold blooded animals like mollusks do not have the ability to regulate their own
body temperature. Mollusks are poikilothermic, their body temperatures vary widely in response to their environment. Significant research has been conducted on what temperature ranges mollusks have been able
to tolerate. Phylogenetically Mollusca is an extremely diverse classification including the Classes Amphineura, Monoplacophora, Gastropoda, Pelecypoda, Scaphopoda, and Cephalopoda. The fossil record presents a particularly interesting account of
the earlier representatives of the phylum. Among the more interesting mollusks are those found in the Pelecypoda Class. The mollusks in this
