They fall between the boreal and temperate classifications and include moist evergreen forests, dry evergreen forests, Mediterranean forests, moist evergreen and broad-leaf forests, temperate evergreen forests, and temperate broad-leaf forests ("Forest Biomes," 2001). Temperate forests in general are found in eastern North America and northeastern Asia, as well as western and central Europe ("Forests," 2001). All temperate deciduous forests are similar to the Taiga biome, and may be found in regions with a mild, short winter season ("Forest Biomes," 2001). In addition to boasting evergreens, other trees are found and include maple, elm, cedar and oak as well as any other tree that lose leaves during autumn (2001). The temperate forests soil is rich and has a great variety of forest floor plant life, which is in part attributable to the fact that the forests canopy is thinner (2001). Because the canopy is slim, it allows more light and heat into the forest which can penetrate, and thus allow photosynthesis for the forests floor plants (2001). The appearance of small, cold-blooded animals like garter snakes, turtles, and amphibians are also characteristic of forest life (2001). Some of the temperate forests species tend to hibernate, or burrow into the ground during the winter (2001). Temperate evergreen forests are found in the middle latitudes where the prevailing winds are able to carry air masses, full of moisture, over the west coasts of continents ("Nature," 2001).
