East-hence the title. This paper discusses some of the points Telhami makes in his book. "Why Do They Hate Us so Much?" This is the question that many Americans were asking after 9/11, and the Bush Administration was quick to provide an answer: "They hate our freedoms-our freedom of religion, our freedom of speech, our freedom to vote and assemble and disagree with each other... These terrorists kill not merely to end lives, but to disrupt and end a way of life" (Telhami, 2003, p. 36). This provided a grieving country with an explanation it could understand, and it also reminded the nation, which was struggling with a terrible impulse to lash and out hurt someone, anyone, in response to the way wed been hurt, that using the weapons of terrorism is never justified. (Telhami, 2003). Its also undeniably true that Osama bin Laden and al-Quaeda are fanatically opposed to anyone who doesnt share their world view, and that in large part this attitude played a part in the attack since they tend to see America as the nation that embodies everything they despise. However, its not true that the beliefs of al-Quaeda are necessarily shared by all Muslims, and that being the case, its also not true the explanation offered by Bush in the speech quoted above can satisfactorily account for the anti-American sentiment that has been building in the world for decades. But in the days following the attack, the administration conflated the two, so that most Americans came to believe that al-Quaeda speaks for the entire Muslim world, that no one from the Middle East can be trusted, and that Osama bin Ladens mission is fueled by the same resentments that many in the Middle East feel toward America ...
