the industrial world. Within the United States there is at least one television in practically every household (Foner). The Economist estimates in fact that ninety-eight percent of U.S.
households have at least one set and of these households over sixty-one percent are connected via cable (The Economist). Many households include multiple sets. The amount of time
individuals watch television varies tremendously, of course, but industry estimates are that the average household watches an average of seven hours a day. The prevalence of televisions in U.S.
households and the average number of hours devoted to the medium by each household make it the ideal medium for a number of applications. It can reach the greatest
number of people the most effectively for the most economical cost. It is for these very reasons that television a prime target for advertisers, politicians and others wishing to
spread their message to the masses. Television was not always so widely successful, however. In fact it was regarded initially by those
who developed and marketed it as more useful in industrial applications. Some of the larger companies who were involved in television technology during its very first days envisioned it
much like we view teleconferencing equipment today, as a tool for sharing graphics and technical information between remote locations. Indeed, television as we know it today would be a
long time in the coming and it was shaped by many, not just a few, who determined its direction and format. Early
