studies would support the social surrogacy hypothesis which basically says that a person can use technology in lieu of real experiences with real people to abate loneliness. The original article
published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology was written by Jaye L. Derrick, Shira Gabriel, and Kurt Hugenberg, the first two authors are from Buffalo State University in New York
and the third is from Miami University. Some may think this conclusion is far-fetched but the fact is that we have known for decades that millions of people think soap
opera characters are real. These viewers become extremely emotionally attached to the characters. We also know that many people confuse a character is a television series with the actor, i.e.,
they think the actor is really that character. The author reports that almost any technology can fulfill human needs for emotional attachment and the need to belong. These technologies
include movies, video games, and music in addition to the television. These outcomes are true even for those persons who have low self-esteem and persons who had suffered
rejection from family or friends. The relationships viewers experience are considered to be illusionary because there is no real person-to-person interaction. This is a one-sided relationship with the viewer developing
emotional ties to the characters on the television. One assumption made is that the social surrogacy hypothesis is valid. One writer found that this hypothesis was proposed thirty years
ago by Rutherford, Colins and Banks in an article entitled "Turn it on Again" (Neurocritic, 2009). The hypothesis then is not new. This is a phenomenon that has been discussed
