workplace every since women and non-mainstream ethnicities first began to infiltrate that workplace. Fortunately, the many problems that persisted for generations are now on the wane. While much
progress remains to be made, modern way workplace can be characterized more by equality than by inequality in regard to gender and ethnicity. Still, however, certain problems persist.
There is an apparent tendency, for example, not just to view women and non-whites differently than mainstream white men but to consciously or subconsciously portray these individuals differently. This
tendency is, in fact, apparent in many facets of American culture. This is particularly true in regard to many contemporary television programs.
When considering the contention presented above, it is important that we recognize there are certain inherent differences between men and women and between the cultures that could, in part, explain
the way that they are differentially portrayed in contemporary television programs. In regard to gender, not only are there obvious biological differences, there are subtle differences in behavior that
can be traced back in history. This is particularly interesting in regard to communication patterns. Holmes (2005) is just one researcher that suggests that these differences relate as
much to socioeconomics as they do to biology. She emphasizes that the inherent nature of some communication characteristics that exist between men that are different that those found in
women (Holmes, 2005). Holmes (2005) notes an inherent politeness in womens communications, for example. This politeness is often lacking in mens communication (Holmes, 2005). Holmes (2005), in
fact, goes so far as to describe men as being linguistically rude and intrusive when compared to women who are more introverted and intuitively polite.
