at an early and potentially less expensive point in the disease process (Quallich, 2003). Telenursing includes the areas of patient education, medication refills, and the promotion of patient self-care (Quallich,
2003). Through this medium, nurses can give needed advice on a broad field of topics that range from basic first aid recommendations to sophisticated disease management regarding a specialty practice
(Quallich, 2003). The use of telenursing is quickly becoming international. In Australia, for example, the establishment of a nursing phone triage system allows enables nurses to assist patients by providing
advice and directing them to health care services that are appropriate to their needs (Nurses offer phone advice, 2003). There are numerous variations on telenursing, which range from medical
secretaries transferring calls to nurses if a patient poses a question to an RN-staffed nurse information line (Quallich, 2003). In telenursing that performs a true triage function, the position is
usually staffed by an RN, as it is crucial that the individual answering such calls has the ability and training to adequately assess the situation (Quallich, 2003). The RN fulfilling
such a role should have experience at quickly assessing patients; should have good communication skills; the ability to work well under pressure and should be able to document events clearly
