parallel journey into maturity and strength which is undertaken by his son, Telemachus. In many ways, Odysseus journey can be seen as the typical and traditional quest of the hero-king:
he is obliged to leave his home unwillingly, undertake a long and often dangerous journey, and in the course of this meet physical and emotional challenges and learn vital lessons
regarding the nature of life and death: without this knowledge he will not be fitted to return home and rule his people as a just and wise king.
However, in many ways the journey which Telemachus undergoes in his growth
to maturity is equally hard. In the first place, there is considerable kudos attached to the classical warrior-quest: Telemachus, however, does not have the drama and adventure of setting out
on a voyage as his father does, since he must stay at home because of his youth. At the point at which Odysseus leaves, his son is only a child:
however, as he grows it becomes clear to him that even though he himself will someday be a man, he is forced to stay behind with the women: Penelopes cleverness
and craft are clear throughout the narrative, but such episodes as her deceiving of the suitors are not considered in the same light as masculine skills of overt bravery and
skill in battle: in this sense, she cannot be a role-model for her son.
