It is the second largest wireless carrier, after Verizon, in the country (Cella 2009). Verizon Communications Inc. is the countrys second largest telecommunications services in the country, after AT&T (Cella 2009). It is the largest wireless carrier (Cella 2009). They provide telephone, long-distance telephone and Internet access across 28 states (Cella 2009). With its joint partnership with Vodafone Group, this company becomes the largest wireless provider in the country (Cella 2009). Sprint Nextel Corporation is #3 in the industry. When Sprint merged with Nextel, Sprint was the #3 provider and Nextel was the #5 provider of wireless communications in the country (Cella 2009). The hope was that the resulting very large corporation could take on Verizon and AT&T (Cella 2009). They have yet to accomplish the goal and with Verizon and AT&T responding so much more quickly to the changes in the industry, it is very doubtful they ever will. Sprint Nextel is the largest local phone company in the U.S., though (Cella 2009). The SEC 10-K filings for each of these companies describe their business in very similar mangers. Verizon states that to increase revenue, they are "devoting our resources to higher growth markets such as the wireless voice and data markets, the broadband and video markets, and the provision of strategic services to business markets" (Verizon 2009, p. 18). Sprint Nextel does not make such a clear and specific statement in their most recent 10-K filing.
