the United States in land area, all of Canada holds only 32 million people, and many of those are concentrated in the East and the West. Manitoba, the easternmost
of the central provinces, holds much less of the population of Canada. The city of Winnipeg is a growing and prosperous one, and is the capital of the province.
In addition to holding government and education centers, Winnipeg also is home to several industries and serves as the "big city" to which outlying farmers and ranchers travel for
needs that cannot be met in small, outlying towns. The purpose here is to assess the city of Winnipeg for the degree to
which it is hospitable to the telecommunications industry. The Local Area Winnipeg is located in the southeastern part of Manitoba, near the junction
of the Assiniboine and Red Rivers that give Winnipeg additional options for transporting the goods produced in the local area. With a population of more than 700,000, Winnipeg contains
63 percent of Manitobas total population of just over 1.1 million (Winnipeg Capital Region, n.d.). As the largest city in the region and the site of a number of
diversified industries, Winnipeg is accessible from even greatly distant locations by means of its international airport, rail, water, highways and excellent telecommunications networks.
The government of Manitoba lists several reasons for Winnipegs attractiveness to business and education, not the least of which is the presence of a diverse selection of industries represented in
