industrialized countries, with the majority of these births occurring in regards to unmarried mothers (Meadows-Oliver, et al, 2007). Nursing interventions can have a beneficial effect on this serious public health
concern. Family health profile Early childbearing places these young women at risk for a number of different adverse outcomes, such as "not obtaining a high school diploma or
general equivalency diploma (GED), being unemployed or underemployed and remaining on public assistance" (Meadows-Oliver, et al, 2007, p. 116). Furthermore, teenage mothers are also at risk for a variety of
developmental outcomes, as they are trying to cope with the major developmental crisis of adolescence, i.e., identity development, while at the same time having to learn the parenting role (Meadows-Oliver,
et al, 2007). Adolescence, in modern society, serves as a time when young people experiment with a variety of roles as they struggle to determine an adult identity. However, teen
pregnancy requires that the teen take on a specific role, motherhood, which is a "full-time role that leaves little time for interactions with peers" or the normal teen experimentation with
various roles" (Meadows-Oliver, et al, 2007, p. 116). The stress involved in a teenage pregnancy and the associated pressure that places on family structure and interpersonal relationships is multifaceted
and considerable in its possible negative repercussions for the mother. Adolescent females experience the "highest per capita rate" of intimate partner violence (IPV), as 21.7 percent of pregnant teens report
