police department and marked a dangerous and growing trend: the coercion of confessions from youth offenders. Citizens of the community have argued that the coercion in the case
of the two boys was racially motivated, and that the outcomes of the interrogation were jaded by the forceful action of police detectives. What is amazing about the case
of these two young boys is that there was a considerable amount of physical evidence at the scene of the crime that suggested that the crime could not have been
committed by the two young boys. For example, semen was found on the young girls clothing, suggesting a sexual assault that could not have been accomplished by the two
pre-pubescent boys (Grace 50). In addition, there were considerable differences in the accounts of the investigation reported by beat police and detectives, suggesting that the detectives may have steamrolled
evidence in an attempt to charge the boys (Grace 50). In addition, the interrogation process may have also determined a problematic component: the boys discussed things that may
have been "planted" by police detectives, meaning they discussed knowledge of the facts of the case rather than determining what the children knew at the onset. Though police are
reluctant to state that the boys had no involvement in the incident, it is clear that the process by which they were interrogated and subsequently arraigned demonstrates the worst case
