teen marriage seems to have a strike against it before the ball is even thrown. It wasnt always the case, during the Middle Ages, women married as early as fourteen. Men generally waited until they were more established in life which was usually when they were in their twenties or early thirties. In 1371, due to the plague, the average age at marriage for men was twenty-four, and for women it was sixteen. By 1427, the average male of all classes did not wed until he was in his mid-30s, usually choosing a bride about half his age. It was not unusual to marry off a young girl as quickly as was economically feasible. In most countries of the world, young girls are no longer married "off" as they once were. Largely because it is believed that more than half who marry in their teens will be divorced within five years. That is a pretty sobering statistic. It has also been shown world wide that, teenage brides usually have less education, less independence and problem solving skills, and certainly less work experience (http://marriage.tqn.com). However in examining the issue of teenage marriage, other information comes to light which appears just as serious. Although teens in general, and especially low-income and minority teens, are often blamed for a host of social problems, from drugs and crime to unmarried childbearing. In reality, teen pregnancy rates have been falling since 1991, and juvenile violent crime rates have leveled off.( (www.abanet.org ).
