of reported HIV/AIDS cases worldwide are recorded in the sub-Sahara. Massaquoi and Tharao (2001) express this statistic in another manner, stating that over two-thirds of all the people living with
HIV in the world, an estimated 25.3 million men, women and children, live in the sub-Sahara. UN sources place the incidence even higher at 83 percent (UN, 1998). It
has been estimated that roughly 330,000 children younger than 5 years of age have died in the region since 1999 from HIV/AIDS infection (Walker, Schwartlander and Bryce, 2002). At the
end of 2003, of the 40 million HIV infected individuals worldwide, 26 million or 65 percent were estimated to be living in the sub-Sahara (Current state, 2004). The HIV/AIDS epidemic
has seriously decreased the average life expectancy in this region, which has declined by 62 years to less than 47 (Holmes, et al, 2003; HIV/AIDS, 2004). Pratt, et al (2000)
state that there is no evidence that the prevalence of HIV/AIDS in the sub-Sahara is abating, despite HIV-prevention programs in various guises. Experts believe that young women of
childbearing age and, particularly adolescent girls, should receive special attention in regards to prevention. There are several reasons for this assessment. Primarily, this evaluation is due to the fact that
young women constitute 55 percent of the sub-Saharan HIV infected population (Current state, 2004). The prevalence of HIV/AIDS among women of childbearing age, and the subsequent increase in mortality rates,
