general. This is particularly the case when teenagers are involved. Too many teens are playing with alcohol and too many have become alcoholics as a result of that
so-called play. Social drinking is simply unacceptable among teenagers. Not only is it illegal, it presents definite medical, psychological, and sociological concerns.
Adolescents today face more threats to the safety, health and welfare than they have at any other time in our history. This is due to a number of
factors but in most cased revolves around declining societal mores. While at one time activities such as sexual promiscuity, drug and alcohol use, and violence were definitely frowned upon
by society, its seems that today these activities are condoned if not encouraged. Teenage social drinking, for example, was not even heard of a few decades ago but today
it seems that it is all the rage. One form of the so-called social drinking that is very popular among teens
is binge drinking. The term binge drinking refers to the drinking of excessive amounts of alcohol in one episode (British Medical Journal, 2001). This phenomena is of serious
concern in that it is not only life threatening but is increasing on a world wide basis. The World Health Organization, in fact, reports that while alcohol consumption may
be decreasing among adults in many countries, the propensity for youth to engage in binge drinking appears to be increasing (British Medical Journal, 2001).
