like Bennis, include passion and curiosity. Being a catalyst, the ability to promote a new idea to fruition, especially one that is unpopular in its initial stages, is another quality
of a good leader (Bennis & Nanus (216). Obviously, effective leaders have many more qualities but these are the ones most often cited in the literature. The President of
the United States must manifest these qualities and more. Some attributes are known by all of us such as the ability to work with: hundreds of diverse individuals; a Congress
that is not only diverse but can be contrarily partisan; special interest groups; and cranks without offending too many people. A monumental task! Utilizing these qualities of a leader and
definitions of leadership, and reviewing Teddy Roosevelts accomplishments I believe he must be considered an effective leader. He initiated many programs to protect the environment, the publics health through the
pure food and drug act, regulation of railroads and business, in general, reclamation acts, and meat inspection, among other acts (Byrd 9). He became a folk hero in his
own time which has made it difficult for historians to analyze his presidency (Walsh 45). Roosevelt changed the way the President interacted with the media; he cultivated journalists, inviting them
into the White House. They, in turn, supported his views strongly in the press. President Roosevelt called this his "bully pulpit" and it was through this he gained support for
his ideas from the public. The effective leader certainly knows how to use available resources to gain support for his or her innovations. Teddy Roosevelt proved to be a master
