three sons adopted different behaviors to survive. Lenny is a pimp and as such, controls the women who work for him. Joey. a would-be boxer and also a demolition worker.
Teddy, the eldest son, is a philosophy professor who left to escape and gain more control over his own life. Joey and Lenny still live at home with their father.
Lenny does not have to live at home; he owns a number of flats for his business and could reasonably live in one of them. Another resident in the flat
is Sam, Maxs brother, who is a limo driver. The title of the play symbolizes Teddys return to London from America. His visit was a surprise to everyone and the
introduction of his wife, Ruth, is a further surprise. Teddy had not been home in several years and had little contact with family members during that time. Teddy is far
from strong when it comes to his family, he cannot even be forceful when his father insults his wife. He seems to just give in, perhaps because he knows that
it would not do any good anyway. His fathers opinion of women is not going to change and he is a course and ignorant person. Each member of this
highly dysfunctional family adopted survival behaviors a long time before the play begins. Instead of getting mired in the chaos for the rest of his life, Teddy chose to leave
the country. Teddy has been described as effete (Prosser, 2005), which means he has either lost the strength and initiative to do what needs to be done or he has
engaged in over-refining his character. It seems that Teddy has done both. He bettered himself with formal education and eventually left the country to become a professor in the U.S.
