He wont hit anything bad, but dont give him anything good." - Bobby Shantz (Baseball Almanac, nd). Ted Williams is one of the greatest hitters baseball has ever known. His first game was on April 20, 1939. During his nineteen year career, he hit 521 home runs, had a lifetime batting average of .344 and RBI of 1,839. He won two Triple Crowns, one in 1942 and the other in 1947. The Triple Crown is awarded to the hitter who leads the league in three different areas: homeruns, batting average and runs batted in (RBI). Williams was MVP (most valuable player) in 1946 and again in 1949. He batting average of .406 in 1941 stands as one of baseballs "magic numbers" (InfoPlease.com, nd; Baseball Almanac, nd). He was the last player to bat .400. He was also selected for the All-Star Game 18 times (Baseball Hall of Fame, nd). In his 19 years with the Boston Red Sox, Williams led the American League in batting six times. And, he did it in between wars. Williams missed three whole seasons between 1943 and 1945 when he served in the Marine Corps during World War II and then missed almost two whole seasons when he service his country again in 1952 and 1953 during the Korean War ...
