technological world. Just a few generations ago people lived in relatively isolated enclaves and had little contact with the outside world. There they were safe. Their religions
and their traditional beliefs defined their world. Today, however, we frequently brush shoulders with other people and other cultures. Aviation has made it possible for us to fly
around the world in just a few hours. Telephones and the Internet has made it possible for us to communicate instantly with others regardless of whether they are sitting
in the same room or are located at the other side of the world. Rather than our religion and our traditions defining our world, technology is defining our world.
Computers, in particular, play a critical role in that definition. Rapid technological change has impacted us on practically every front. These
impacts are both positive and negative and can be analyzed on psychological, anthropological and sociological levels alike. This contention can be demonstrated quite effectively by looking at specific areas
where technology has impacted our traditional beliefs. Our growing dependence on computers in everything from education to digital crime is an excellent example.
Hern?ndez-Ramos (2005, p. 39) reports that in 2001 that our nations schools were home to "more than 10 million computers, with 99 percent of schools and 87
percent of classrooms connected to the Internet, and one Internet-wired computer for every 5.4 students". The almost overnight move to incorporate more and more computers in education is regarded
