whether or not technological advancement should always been seen as an improvement. There are many works, both fiction and non-fiction, that discuss this question. Well look at "Nightfall" by Isaac Asimov; "The Birth-Mark" by Nathaniel Hawthorne; "Dr. Heideggers Experiment" by Hawthorne; Melvin Kranzbergs paper "Science-Technology-Society: Its as Easy as XYZ" and "Tomorrows Lesson: Learn or Perish" by Michael Lemonick and Sophfronia Scott to see what they have to say about the issue. Well also pick up five additional sources, and consider them. Then well draw a conclusion from the ten sources and see if the authors in general see technology as a benefit or a threat. Discussion "Nightfall" is one of Asimovs earliest stories, and one of his most memorable. It tells of the inhabitants of the planet Lagash, which has six suns and is always in daylight (Asimov). Once every 2,500 years, however, the suns orbits are such that the entire planet is left in darkness for a half-day, and during that time, because the inhabitants have never, ever seen darkness, they go mad (Asimov). They burn their cities to have light, and in so doing, destroy their civilization, which then has to rebuild (Asimov). As this story opens, Lagash is facing Darkness once again, but this time the astronomers have figured out whats going to happen and are hoping to leave records so the next generation will understand, and be able to prepare for it (Asimov). But even though they are scientists, the men at the Observatory who made the predictions cannot help but succumb to the fear that engulfs the planet when the last light fades (Asimov). The only hope is that it appears the records have not been destroyed, so perhaps the next civilization will have a chance of breaking the cycle. This story puts technology ...
