Discussion The ultimate example of the dehumanizing aspects of technology must surely be the Nazi extermination of the peoples of Europe. Their decades-long murder spree is unbelievable and horrific; and at least a part of our revulsion stems from the technology they employed to carry out their plans. The death camps were perfect examples of technology put in service to pure evil; its quite likely that if they had not perfected their extermination systems, the Nazis could not have killed the number of people they did. Technology today is (one hopes) not being used to construct death camps, but there is an unsettling feeling that too many people know too much about all of us. Information that should be private is turning up in databases and as a result, we are inundated with offers from banks, insurance companies, and other concerns who think we "fit" the services they offer. While this may be merely annoying when it comes to dealing with the junk mail, both snail mail and email, that comes pouring into our homes, it is something else when the information being shared is sensitive, say perhaps dealing with a persons health care or financial status. Its easy to think of examples where having this information made public would be a serious breach of personal privacy.
