Many of todays systems build on the human relations school of management and it is argued that "modern information technology in the workplace allows employees to self-manage, thereby removing the issue of managerial control from the workplace". Managerial control maybe a cause of resentment that can reduce motivation and productivity, but it we look at technology, whilst there is the opportunity for this to take place, it may be more accurate to argue that it changes the way that the control takes place. If we look at many organisations that use technology to reduce the direct supervision, the employees may feel that they are freer from direct control, but employers still know many facts regarding their employees performance, such as work rates, quality rates and detailed attendance records all at the click of a mouse. Many call centres see staff who are working without apparent direct supervision. This itself can engender a greater feeling of trust between employee and employer. It is interesting to note that in studies that have looked at the increased use of technology in such circumstances have indicated that there is an increased level of production (Johnson and Bharadwaj, 2005). However, this may be more an issue of the technology rather than the impact on the employees, at it was also found with the technology there was also an increased feeling of job insecurity (Johnson and Bharadwaj, 2005). This also demonstrated that one area which could result in increased product was the area of control (Johnson and Bharadwaj, 2005).
