the period of the two World Wars is almost impossible; there is just too much material. Instead of trying to cover everything, it seems reasonable to pick two types of
weapons that were in use from 1914 through 1945 and trace developments in each. The two are aircraft and aircraft systems; and submarines; it would have been useful to consider
tanks as well, but the paper is too short. There are of course many other possibilities such as small arms, nuclear weapons, and poison gas. But small arms (side
arms and rifles) are also found in civilian life, and seemed less specialized than larger systems. Nuclear weapons didnt come into use until the Second World War, and poison gas
was outlawed long before that conflict broke out. But planes and submarines have developed steadily throughout that time frame, and seemed logical choices for examination. Developments in Aviation
