is an important aspect of any business, especially those involved in technological areas. One company that has used research and development extensively is Xerox. The research and development is into
new products as well as the systems that are used to manufacture and provide products and services. Xerox is a well known company and has faced many challenges; the
company is large and has faced time of inefficiency and increased competition where market share has been lost. The company had sought to regain market share as well as improve
services. One area many companies seek to improve is that of costs, if costs can be lowered and sales remain the same or improve then profits will improve. It was
with a unique innomvatiosn that Xerox saw large cost savings, as a result of the research and development department working with the employees in the field.
The Xerox Eureka system is the result of the use of technology and the innovation that it spurred. In 1999 when the Eureka project received the
Best Knowledge Management Project in the Information Management `99 Awards this was the third award in six weeks (Business Wire, 1999). The programme was described in the following terms; "Eureka
represents the new face of Xerox as a solutions provider, as the worlds sixth largest IT company, and as the company at the forefront of helping companies leverage knowledge for
competitive advantage. This award recognises the hours of hard work, inventiveness and creativity that goes into developing and building such a solution" (Business Wire, 1999).
