it is an industry that can benefit from the use of analysis will which will help focus resources on areas where they are needed in order to create a more
effective service (McLaughlin et al, 2003). The way in which healthcare is delivered is changed over the last few decades. With increasing
demands, longer life and developing healthcare technology there are elevating the pressures placed on healthcare practices. These have to be dealt with in an environment where there is an emphasis
on both cost and quality (McLaughlin et al, 2003). Information technology is becoming more popular with is used in operations management. This is
also coinciding at a time when there is a higher job content placed on administrative aspects of health care. In 1994 only 35.4% of healthcare practices in United States had
networked computers, by 2003 this had increased to 61.4% (Sobol and Prater, 2006). The way that information technology is being used is also changing. In the past the systems were
being used in a more limited manner, with more emphasis placed on aspects such as business record-keeping and scheduling; generic activities common in all business practices. By 2003 this is
changing, although the systems are still being used for these generic support systems, they are more active in the everyday operations of the practices (Sobol and Prater, 2006). There is
an increased use in the way they are helping with facilities scheduling and patient scheduling, which helps to improve the efficiency in the way a healthcare facility is running (Sobol
