in supporting an ethical business culture. The development of an organizational culture of ethics, one in which employees act in a manner in alignment with the ethical directives of
the organization, can be fostered through the use of technology. At the same time, this kind of business culture also brings into question whether the use of technology fosters
ethical behavior or simply polices compliance. In determining what role technology can play, it is important to understand that ethics
can be defined by a social, organizational and moral parameters that set the culture through which ethics are defined. The same business practices that support the noble cause of
embryonic stem cell research in one company may be deemed unethical in the same type of laboratory setting in a Catholic university. While some pharmaceutical companies may offer lower
cost alternatives to provide medications to those in need, other companies overprice their drugs in order to maintain the greatest outcome for their shareholders. In each case, there is
a stakeholder group who benefits from the actions and would find the behaviors of the company ethical, while others would not. Ethics in business is often dependent on the
nature of the business culture and the views of all the stakeholders. From a managerial standpoint, the most obvious area in which
technology can be used to maintain an ethical standard in the workplace is in monitoring office communications through the use of e-mail. While workplace managers might view the use
of e-mail monitoring systems to track worker communications as an ethical extension of managerial process, employees may in fact view this as a breech of privacy (Spinello, 1997). While
