human life ever since primitive man picked up a stick or rock and used it as a tool. There has, of course, been a long evolutionary path between that
first primitive tool and the world in which we live today. The twentieth century in particular was characterized by phenomenal technological advancements. American culture evolved right alongside those
advancements. In the early twentieth century the U.S. was characterized by a few large urban areas and large expanses of rural land punctuated
by small towns and communities. With the exception of the city dwellers, American families lived primarily an agrarian lifestyle. They spent most of their lives within a few
miles of where they were born and where they ultimately would be buried. They relied every day on the modern technological advances of the day. There were newly
invented farming devices that soon replaced the horse drawn plows and mowers that farming families had depended on for generations. There were labor saving devices like washing machines just
beginning to make their way into common usage. Families at this point in our history were large multi-branched entities and several generations typically
lived under one roof. This was, in fact, a necessity in these relatively harsh times. It took the concerted effort of many just to subsist. The men
worked in the fields and the women in the gardens and homes. The grandparents, aunts, and uncles were all there or at the very least close by to help
absorb some of the child rearing chores. The children themselves, in fact, were productive members of these extended families. They were expected to help with chores just as
