innovation being unable to become a competitive advantage. Over the years the concept of what is meant by technology has changed, from the time of the industrial revolution to
the modern use of computer chips, the pace of progress has dictated the way ideas have emerged and the way that they could be acted upon. When considering the argument
that the idea is only the beginning it may be argued that the most difficult part of the process is making the idea work. However, it can also be argued
that many technological ideas have taken time to emerge and therefore it is not only making them work that is important, many firms spend millions of dollars ion research and
development, not only looking to make new technological ideas or innovation work, but seeking to develop the ideas. The quote above indicates that there is not usually an
issue when it comes to the thinking up of ideas. If the number of patents registered is considered these have been increasing, in the US in 2005 there was a
record year, a total of 409,532 patent applications were filed and 165,485 patents were issued, this was an 11% increase on 2004 (United States Patent and Trade Mark Office, 2006).
This appears to indicate that there is a plethora of ideas, if there were not the ideas these patents would not be pending. The advantage with technology is the
