words, every company needs a contingency plan. Companies have streamlined so much that a customer with just-in-time (JIT) inventory would suffer significant losses if their supplier suddenly experienced a malfunction
or a failure in their information systems. The global marketplace also leaves companies needing a contingency plan. In many parts of the world, disruptions in electricity or telephone lines
is a common occurrence. Some companies have backup generators but some dont. If a company orders supplies from one of these foreign firms where power is often out, both the
supplier and the ordering company need to have a backup plan to assure continued production. Consider this example. A K-mart outside Philadelphia serviced all K-marts on the Eastern coast.
That warehouse burned to the ground in 1982. The store "maintained its inventory by carefully coordinating manufacturer drop shipments and using its remaining DCs" (Aichlmayr, 2000, p. 71). K-mart suffered
much higher transportation costs but they were able to continue without a long disruption in service. In another case, Bosch Automotive in North Carolina was contracted with Ford Motor
Co. as a JIT supplier. Hurricane Hugo took the roof off Boshs manufacturing plant; electricity was out and so was the telephone. Bosh had a contingency plan, part of which
was to use their cell phones to contact partners. But, the cell phone network was also saturated and no one could dial out. The company went to the next plan
and had people running back and forth to communicate with each other. As this event suggests, it is important to have a contingency plan for information systems disruption and there
also needs to be a back up plan for the contingency plan. 2. Computer Viruses: Harrison, Ann. (2000, June 26). AOL Investigates Theft of Account Data ; 200
