This is a statement in seventh edition of a research report entitled Effectiveness of Technology in Schools (Branch, 2000, p. 16). This report went on to say that the effect
of technology in a school is directly linked to how the technology is used and how well educators are trained to use it (Branch, 2000). The most recent data
indicate that Some 63 percent of Americas classrooms are currently hooked up to the Internet, that is up from 27 percent two years ago. In high-poverty schools, the number of
classrooms that gained access to the Internet increased 178 percent but the access is only available in 39 percent of these schools (Revenaugh, 2000). In the 1991-1992 school year, approximately
$2.1 billion were spent on technology; in the 1999-2000 school year, that figure had tripled to $6.2 billion. The greater proportion of the funds were spent on hardware (Branch, 2000).
Technology is a fact of life; there is no aspect in daily life that is not affected in one way or another by technological tools. The Internet has
also had a significant impact, literally changing the way business is conducted. Think about what the Internet can do for learners. For one thing, students can research any topic at
all and obtain information from all over the world. They can "travel" to museums in other corners of the globe. They can examine molecular structures in three dimensions. They can
have an electronic pen pal from another country and learn about life in that country. There are literally few limits to what they can do with access to the Internet.
