Historical Information Two technologies for learning were invented around the same time. In 1849, lantern slides were introduced. Photographs were transformed into transparent slides that were projected onto a surface that could be seen by a large audience (The Library of Congress American Memory, 2012). This was not the first time glass plates were used to project images. In the 17th century, the Magic Lantern, also known as Sciopticon, projected painted images on glass for picture shows for children. William and Frederick Langenheim advanced this technology to the Hyalotyppe in 1850 (The Library of Congress American Memory, 2012). The overhead projector was also invented in the 1800s. It was an advance on the opaque projector which was the first projector that used light to project images (Maughan, 2012). They were used in lecture halls and universities and also for amusement. The episcope and epidiasdope were two versions of this technology (Maughan, 2012). There is a system of prisms and mirrors used in these machines. The overhead projectors of the 1940s capitalized on the slide projector technology that had been around for a century by then. The overhead projector was used by the U.S. Army to train large groups of soldiers for the war (Maughan, 2012). Overhead projectors were incorporated in schools in the 1940s and 1950s.
