While some scoff at the notion that war is beneficial, history shows that war can indeed spur creative thought and development of new technologies. War can point out a nations
weak points. If only we had faster planes, a person might think, then we could have won that battle. While the idea is simply put, it is true that better
equipment can make a difference between losing and winning a war. Indeed, many do believe that war encourages the development of air planes and even the cold war led directly
to the computer age (Mason 13). Certainly a link exists between war and technology. After all, war is shattering and affects the outlook of the people of any nation. During
war, people suddenly realize how precious life is, but more importantly why they are willing to sacrifice their own lives for their country. This encourages inventors to think of ways
to better protect their societies. Better weaponry, transportation and telecommunications are integral to winning war. But while companies develop tanks and bombers, the new technology also has the advantage of
spurring private industry; both the military and private enterprise then feed each other with information and inspiration. When the U.S. entered World War I, the federal government expanded enormously
in size, scope, and power (Higgs 58). The expansion of government had an impact on industry too. It virtually nationalized ocean shipping and did effectively nationalize the railroad, telephone, domestic
telegraph, and international telegraphic cable industries as well (58). By the time World War II began in 1939, both the size and scope of the central U.S. government had expanded
