the whims of George and Jane. Yes, robotics is rather intriguing and other science fiction attempts have revealed interesting results with Bicentennial Man and A.I., for example, that each touch on the human element of artificial intelligence. Will robots be humanized? That is a lingering question. Yet, robotics in reality is not as exciting as it is in fiction. In fact, the field has not gotten very far. However, Gutkind (2003) sees the "end game" for robots as being intelligent and autonomous. There will be a robotic crew for example to serve the elderly, take care of the children and so forth (2003). Of course, this is not a reality yet and robotics for the most part in ordinary life consists of the self-propelled lawn mower and little else aside from toys that mmimic what the future of robotics might be like. While this might be true, there are other opinions. Joe Engelberger notes that the reason why the machines are not humanized is because the robots do not need minds of their own (2003). They are programmed. Still, on the horizon are robots that can do heart surgery or retrieve land mines ("A robot," 2000). Genetic engineering has come a long way in the past few decades. While once a pie in the sky idea, many women have birthed babies that have not belonged to them. Cloning has become a reality and while it is uncertain as to whether or not a human clone had been made, there is evidence that animals have been cloned. While fascinating, and potentially favorable for infertile couples and people with diseases dependent on genetic research, there are many moral implications that continue to be addressed. Finally, nanotechnology is technically molecular manufacturing ("What," 2002). It is actually building new things one atom ...
