World War a great deal of attention is paid to the military technological development which took place, but other areas of technological innovation were taking place which were precursors of
technology we take for granted today which have had social and economic impacts. Some innovations appeared unimportant during this time, and their real value was not noted until later, whereas
others were seen as a major technological progress. One of the smaller innovations which did not appear to be successful was the first mechanical cash dispenser, which was invented
by Luther George Simjian at the City Bank of New York in 1939. This was a precursor t the automatic teller machine (ATM), but can be argued as being ahead
of its time as it was withdrawn from use after only six months due to customers not adapting to the technology (MIT, 2007). Other technological developments have had a
more immediate effect; that of the photocopier. This was developed as the result of a need. The inventor; Chester Carlson, a patent attorney and part-time inventor, noticed that while he
was undertaking the work they never seem to be sufficient copies of the patron specifications. The common method of duplication at the time was use of carbon paper to make
several copies of the same document. If Carlson was to get additional copies of patented expectations he had two alternatives; to get typists to make more copies, or to use
the expensive photocopies which were available. He envisaged a solution; a small copying machine which could be placed in an office with a mechanism depending on light reflecting properties (Brynes,
2004). The idea led to a successful reproduction taking place on the 22nd of October 1938 nine with the use of slides and microscopes the process of electro-photography was developed.
