Interdisciplinary teams have taken on a progressively more important role in healthcare over the decades. Huber (2010) emphasizes that teams have become more
and more important because of the growing complexity of information that must be managed and effectively utilized. Huber (2010) contends that "effective knowledge work teams can create a form
of synergism in which the outcome is greater than the sum of individual effort" (216). In other words, teams can be more effective storehouses and implementers of healthcare knowledge.
Consider, for example, the concept of infection control. The complexity of potential infective organisms and sources coupled with the gamut of control approaches that might be taken make
teams imperative in infection control management. To be effective, however, teams must be carefully structured, planning must be meticulous, and there must be a means of evaluating effectiveness.
These responsibilities typically fall to the leader of such teams, to the chairperson. One particular important aspect of forming an infection control committee is selecting the right members for
that committee. Often this selection, of course, is limited by availability of potential members. While it would be optimal to have the nations foremost experts on infection control
