of teamwork is not with the staff make up the team, it is with the current management. In an organisation where there is
the use of teamwork is successful it an be argued that it is the culture and the attitudes that are more important that the more piratical aspects such as who
leads the team and the design of structure of the team. However, it can also be argued that with bad leadership or poor and inappropriate structure the chances of success
will be lessened. To consider this we need to look at the theory that underpins the use of teams and how they can be successful and assess to what degree
leadership and management are important and the ways in which management may result in difficulties within a teamwork environment. Tom Peters has laid down some rules he
believes need to be followed in order for teams to be successful, all of which concern the way in which the team is managed directly, or indirectly; There need to
be clear goals for the team. Without goals there will be no achievements and this may be said of any team, regardless of the environment in which it operates (Flemming
and Koppleman, 1996). The issue of the successful team is how and why the goal(s) may, or may not, be achieved. Peters
