It is the leadership that will dictate or encourage a positive corporate culture which will include elements such as values and ethics as well as work practices and the attitude to work, such as a team sprit. It is widely recognised that teamwork adds more value than an individualistic atmosphere in the majority of cases. However, teamwork may fail for a variety of reasons, Lencioni, (2002) divides this into five main categories; the absence of trust, a fear of conflict, a lack of commitment, avoidance of accountability, and inattention to results. If we consider these in terms of the way a company operates and the leadership then we can see how they manifest in reality. Where we wish to develop a positive team working environment we first need to consider the leadership and how this may be develop to facilitate a team attitude. There are many styles of leadership, in an international organisation this will also occur at many levels. To begin with we may look at the way leaders are seen, there is a great deal of consideration over the training of leaders, and whether a leader is born or made. The argument does not deny the need for training, but some argue that there is a need for certain characteristics to be present. Peter Drucker offers an insight to leadership in the late twentieth century and these required qualities.
