As companies face a more competitive global marketplace and as changes occur so quickly, companies have searched for new organizational structures and operational practices to maintain a competitive advantage. One of the models found to be effective is teamwork. This essay begins with a general introduction to teamwork and then discusses the stages of team development. A case study of one company's implementation of teams and their results is reported. The failure of teams is also discussed followed by a section on how to improve teamwork. A conclusion provides a summary of the essay along with other comments. Bibliography lists 10 sources.

path to follow (Parker, 2003). It is teamwork that leads a company to greater success in todays business world (Parker, 2003). The same is true for job specialization, employees at
any level cannot be skilled in only one aspect of the company, cross-functional employees are needed (Parker, 2003). The rigid hierarchical lines and charts are also out of synch today,
collaboration is found to result in greater success (Parker, 2003). Today, organizations must be able to adapt quickly, they must be horizontal in nature, and they must use knowledge and
information effectively (Parker, 2003). Communication channels need to be in all directions rather than following the old top-bottom model. One organizational and operational structure that has been utilized successfully in
management is the implementation of work teams and more specifically, cross-functional teams (Parker, 2003). Leroy Zimdars, the director of supply chain management at Harley-Davidson, attested to this premise: "Cross-functional teams
are at the heart of every motorcycle produced at Harley-Davidson Motor Company" (Parker, 2003, p. 21). Hutchens Resnik & Associates assert that "highly successful organizations optimize their potential by capitalizing
on the synergies of effective work groups" (2001). Parker reported that many organizations have teams comprised of individuals from eight or more specialty areas working together to accomplish numerous
diverse tasks (Parker, 2003). Some examples include bringing a new product to market, developing the next generation of computer systems or programs, creating and developing a new medication, long-term strategic
