The words group and team are often used interchangeably. In most conversations, it does not usually cause any confusion because everyone know what is meant. However, there are very definite differences between a group and a team but a team is a type of group. A group is comprised of at least two people who are in the same place at the same time. A team is a small group of people who are together to achieve a common goal. Groups may or may not have common goals. The term team suggests something that is more cohesive. Both groups and teams are found in most organizations. There are different types and levels of groups in organizations, identified as dependent, independent and interdependent (Wiley Publishing, 2010). An example of a dependent work group would be a department or unit in a business. A manager overseas the group and each person is performing a specific job. The manager is the boss (Wiley Publishing, 2010). Independent-level groups are common today. In this group, the supervisor provides guidance and direction as it is needed. The interdependent group is one where employees are dependent on each other to get their own jobs completed (Wiley Publishing, 2010). They must coordinate with each other to achieve the goal. The interdependence in this group makes it a type of team. Teams always share a common goal.
