While it is true that all teams are not working on IT projects and all teams are not project teams, these data still provide offer a measurement for success and failure of teams. Writing about sales teams, Marchetti reported that only 13 percent of sales teams "performed effectively" (1997, p. 91). Because an assortment of individuals are assigned to a work team does not mean they will become a fully functioning group and successful team. In fact, according to some authors, the odds are against such success. Gates commented: "workplace teams are counter-cultural and un-American" (n.d.). The reason is rather simple, successful teams require cooperation and this culture is built on individual accomplishments (Gates, n.d.). Since the advent of the industrial economy, individual effort has been rewarded, not cooperative effort (Gates, n.d.). Jehn also commented on this issue: "Historically, organizations have been based on power and status differentials that inhibit open communication and criticism" (1997, p. 24). Teams are here to stay but companies are failing to structure the teams appropriately and they are failing to train the people who participate on teams. Jehn commented: "To stay competitive in an increasingly dynamic environment, organizations need to awake to the benefits of a new structural form. . . . The resulting organizational form utilizes teams and taskforces that embrace diversity and constructive conflict" (1997, p. 24). Parker commented that the changes in the marketplace have led to operational changes, many of which are dramatic (2003). Individualism is no longer a successful path to follow (Parker, 2003).
